Translating Evidence into Action in Nigeria’s Food System

In Nigeria today, food insecurity is no longer a distant threat — it is a daily reality for millions. From urban centers to rural farming communities, the struggle for access to affordable, nutritious food is exacerbated by rising inflation, erratic rainfall, insecurity, and a fragmented policy response.

Yet, amidst this crisis lies a silent opportunity: data.

Each day, terabytes of agricultural, climate, trade, and nutritional data are collected across ministries, agencies, markets, and borders. But much of this evidence remains buried in technical reports, spreadsheets, and inaccessible platforms, far removed from the desks of decision-makers who could turn it into solutions.

This blog was created to bridge that gap.

About Us

Food Security Insights  (FSI) is a policy-driven platform created as part of the School of Politics, Policy and Governance (SPPG), 2025 Food Security Capstone Project, a commitment to evidence-based policymaking and inclusive governance. It exists to bridge the gap between fragmented agricultural data and real-time policy decisions in Nigeria, translating complex information into simple, actionable insights that can improve food security outcomes. FSI draws on open-source data, expert consultations, and grassroots voices, because building food-secure systems must be a collective effort.

Our Mission

To simplify complex agricultural and food security data into policy-relevant insights that can inform, inspire, and influence real-time decisions in Nigeria.

Why FSI Matters

Food security is not just about food, it is about systems: production, transportation, climate resilience, market access, and governance. But policy cannot respond to what it cannot see. And in Nigeria, where delays in data can mean the difference between abundance and hunger, visibility is power. FSI provides that visibility. It connects the dots between:

  • What the data shows

  • What’s happening on the ground

  • And what policymakers can do. Now

What You’ll Find on FSI

  • Data in Focus: Short, accessible analyses of food price trends, production data, climate shocks, and supply chain disruptions, backed by real-time sources.

  • Policy & Action: Summaries of policy briefs, scenario insights, and early warning signals that support proactive governance.

  • Voices & Perspectives: Stories from farmers, traders, and local leaders that humanize the numbers and restore context to the crisis.

  • Weekly Digest: Curated updates on food security trends, policies, and regional developments — so readers can stay informed without being overwhelmed.

We acknowledge the support and data made available by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBC),  Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security (FMAFS), Agriculture Research Council of Nigeria (ARCN), United Nations Development Program (UNDP), United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), African Development Bank (AfDB), International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA), Bank of Agriculture (BoA), and local market monitors. Their work underpins much of the analysis shared here.

This platform is powered by open knowledge, civic duty, and a belief that public data should serve public good. We believe that every policymaker, journalist, researcher, and citizen deserves access to clear, reliable insights on Nigeria’s food system.
